eSIM vs physical SIM: which is better for travel?

The pros and cons of going digital, and when a local SIM still wins.
The case for eSIM
eSIMs are instant, contactless, and let you keep your home number active. You can buy before you fly and avoid airport SIM kiosks entirely.
When a physical SIM still makes sense
If you need a local phone number, very high data volumes, or you're staying long-term, a local physical SIM can be cheaper. Older phones without eSIM support also need one.
Our take
For most short and mid-length trips, a travel eSIM is the simplest, safest choice — and with direct-carrier pricing you'll usually beat both roaming and a local SIM.
